The Last Mughal is an engaging read that elaborates on the annihilation of the House of Timur – focus stays on Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor, while the story dollies back and forth to unravel in great detail the mutiny of 1857 Delhi shares the focus with the Last Mughal. The Last Mughal, The Fall of a Dynasty, Delhi 1857, a historical account of the mutiny of 1857 came out in 2002, and is a result of another long affair that Dalrymple has had with the Mughals. Dalrymple’s love-affair with India and more precisely with Delhi has resulted in many interesting offshoots, the first in line being City of Djinns, a travelogue that deals in detail with the capital of India, Delhi. William Dalrymple is a well-known figure in India – his Jaipur Literature Festival has become the much-loved purlieu of literary elites and though Dalrymple has attracted flak from some rare corners ( I am primarily reminded of Hartosh Singh Bal’s piece in Open), it is impossible to deny that he has gathered many fans too.
